St. Mary Magdalene with Jesus Carrying the Cross

Occasionally, Magdalene can be seen in the crowd surrounding Jesus as he carries the cross to Golgotha. This "calvary road" is sometimes referred to as the "Via Dolorosa," where pilgrims today walk the path Jesus followed to the crucifixion. Many painters of the middle ages believed that Mary Magdalene accompanied Jesus, wailing and lamenting his imminent execution.
