Mary Magdalene: Christianity's Hidden Goddess
AUTH.Lynn Picknett
PUB.Carroll & Graf
ISBN0786711728
CAT.Non-Fiction
MISC:Book description: What is the truth about the "other Mary"-one of the most important female figures of the New Testament, second only to Mary the Mother? Although nearly written out of the Biblical Gospels as merely a redeemed "fallen woman," Mary Magdalene is the secret Gnostic Gospels' major character after Jesus himself. The Gnostic Gospel of Mary, for example, states that after the crucifixion, the apostles were rallied with an impassioned and enlightened sermon given by Mary Magdalene, and the Gospel of Thomas relates that Jesus called her "The Woman Who Knows All." Undoing centuries of confusion and cover-up, Mary Magdalene: Christianity's Hidden Goddess will startle even contemporary Christians who have used her example to argue for the ordination of women and New Age believers who hail her as a feminine archetype of the "goddess."
The Goddess in the Gospels : Reclaiming the Sacred Feminine
AUTH.Margaret Starbird
PUB.Bear & Co
ISBN187918155X
CAT.Non-Fiction
MISC:Review: This book is mostly autobiographical in nature, in that it devotes most of its pages to explaining the hows and whys behind Margaret Starbird's plunge into the legends of Mary Magdalene. While it may be considered a "light read," the subject matter is far from trivial. She also talks about the gematria involved in the original Greek words in the gospels that indicate some uncanny coincidences that can't quite be explained away. Read more...
The Hebrew Goddess
AUTH.Raphael Patai
PUB.Wayne State University Press
ISBN0814322719
CAT.Non-Fiction
MISC:From the Publisher "The Hebrew Goddess" demonstrates that the Jewish religion, far from being pure monotheism, contained from earliest times strong polytheistic elements, chief of which was the cult of the mother goddess. Lucidly written and richly illustrated, this third edition contains new chapters of the Shekhina.

The Mary Magdalene Within
AUTH.Joan Norton
PUB.iUniverse
ISBN0595338402
CAT.Non-Fiction
MISC:From the back cover: "Early one morning in April 1996, author Joan Norton took up her writing instruments and asked her Cosmic Intelligence (as she calls her inner guidance) what "they" wanted her to write about. She was told that Mary Magdalene wanted to speak through her. The result of this intense emotional experience is 'The Mary Magdalene Within.'"
The Moon Under Her Feet
AUTH.Clysta Kinstler
PUB.Harper San Francisco
ISBN0062504975
CAT.Fiction
MISC:Review: This is a romantic novel about what could have happened between Mary Magdalene and Jesus. Kinstler writes from the point of view that Magdalene was a temple priestess, so if that perspective agrees with you, this is a very worthwhile read. She provides a bibliography and great notes in the back for anyone who wishes to further pursue the ideas presented in her book.
The Secret Magdalene
AUTH.Ki Longfellow
PUB.Eio Books
ISBN0975925539
CAT.Fiction
MISC:Book description: "Detailed, poetic, and fully human, this is a thrilling novel, a powerful evocation of a Mary Magdalene who was in her own right a philosopher, a traveler, a teacher, and a prophet. This Mary Magdalene was much more than a wife, much more than a favored follower, more even than the Beloved Disciple. Mariamne Magdal-eder "knew the All." And while the popular view of the Magdalene has lately begun to change its shape from repentant sinner to Beloved Disciple, few speak of what "knowing the All" actually means.

KNOWING THE ALL is the heart of the Christ's original Gnostic teaching. It was the Apostle Paul's message, his "revelation of the Lord" that blinded him on the road to "Damascus." It was the very heart of early Christianity.

Still beating, Gnosis, or "knowing," was cut out of the body of the Church more than sixteen hundred years ago—and was then buried so deeply and for so long, all involved lived and died in the belief it could never come again. But it has. With the discovery in 1945 of the Nag Hammadi codices, perhaps the last of their kind, Mary Magdalene has returned to us in the full splendor of her original form.

The Secret Magdalene is not only a painstakingly researched portrait of a great woman who was wise beyond her time and her place, it is a portrait of the search for GNOSIS—the individual's direct experience of God."

The Woman With the Alabaster Jar : Mary Magdalen and the Holy Grail
AUTH.Margaret Starbird
PUB.Bear & Co
ISBN1879181037
CAT.Non-Fiction
MISC:Review: I would recommend reading this and her second book together, because the second book serves well to illustrate how intrinsically tied the first book is with her personal quest for the Divine Feminine. "The Woman With the Alabaster Jar" poses questions that I believe are far from being answered to the satisfaction of everyone, but they are still intriguing questions. Was Mary Magdalene married to Jesus? Did she carry his child into France? The real value in this book is not the speculation about their literal marriage, but whether or not the medieval Cathars believed they were, and an introduction to sacred union symbolism.
The Women's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets
AUTH.Barbara Walker
PUB.Harper San Francisco
ISBN006250925X
CAT.Non-Fiction
MISC:Although I agree with the other critical reviews of this book in that it is unscholarly in the extreme, I encourage the reader to decide for him/herself. One needs only to check Walker's references...Read more...
When God Was A Woman
AUTH.Merlin Stone
PUB.Harcourt
ISBN015696158X

MISC:Ingram editorial review: Here, archaeologically documented is the story of the religion of the Goddess. Known by many names, she reigned supreme in the Near and Middle East. How did the change in women's roles come about? By documenting the wholesale rewriting of myth and religious dogmans, Stone details an ancient conspiracy that laid the foundation for one of culture's greatest shams--the legend of Adam and fallen Eve.

MISC:Ingram editorial review: Goddess religion was widespread in the world of the Bible and is reflected in many biblical texts. This provocative and reliable book, based on thorough analyses of primary sources, examines the role of the feminine deity in religious piety in three areas: Asia, the ancient Mediterranean, and in three contexts today.
